INTRODUCTION

Are You Feeling Down in the Dumps?

The way we perceive a given situation or event (e.g. being stuck in a traffic jam, having to make a presentation before a group, etc.) is sometimes more critical than the event itself. For example, if we view the traffic jam as a timely opportunity to delay the arrival of an aversive occurrence (like facing a lengthy, boring meeting), then the emotional reaction on our part would be relief. Conversely, if we view the same event (traffic jam) leading to a loss in job or negative performance appraisal by our boss, then the reaction would be one of anger or depression. Hence, your thoughts and internal verbalizations can lead to maladaptive emotional and/or behavioural consequences.

The following assessment may help you become more aware of how frequently you think such thoughts in response to everyday occurrences. Use the rating scale and indicate the number for each question. At the end of the assessment, total up your score.
